A stone chip on the highway is the most common way a Tesla owner meets an unexpected bill, and the windshield is more involved than on most cars. It carries the forward-facing cameras that Autopilot and the active safety features depend on, it is large, and on the Model 3 and Model Y it runs a long way up toward the glass roof. That raises two questions on top of the price: who pays, and what has to happen to the cameras afterwards.
This guide covers what a Tesla windshield replacement typically costs, whether insurance or the Tesla warranty covers it, when a chip can be repaired instead, and how to recalibrate the cameras afterwards, which is the step that most often catches owners out.
The quick version, by situation:
| Situation | What Usually Happens | Typical Cost to You |
|---|---|---|
| Small chip, not in the camera area | Resin repair, often covered by comprehensive insurance with no deductible | Often $0 with comprehensive cover |
| Crack or large chip, insured with comprehensive | Replacement through an insurance glass claim | Your comprehensive deductible, or $0 in zero-deductible states |
| Model 3 replacement, paying yourself | Independent glass shop or Tesla service | About $305 to $804 in recent quotes, up to about $1,154 with calibration |
| Model Y replacement, paying yourself | Independent glass shop or Tesla service | About $513 to $875 in recent quotes, up to about $1,225 with calibration |
| Factory defect in the glass | Covered by Tesla’s basic warranty | $0 inside 4 years or 50,000 miles |
Do not drive if a crack blocks your view of the road, the glass is shattered or sagging, or the camera area behind the mirror is cracked or misted. A crack in front of the cameras can affect the driver-assistance features, and a badly damaged windshield is weaker in a crash. A small chip outside your line of sight is not an emergency, but get it repaired quickly, before temperature changes and road vibration spread it into a crack.
How Much a Tesla Windshield Replacement Costs
Prices depend on the model, the year, whether the glass is genuine Tesla or aftermarket, your location, and whether calibration is included. Glass.net, which publishes recent customer quotes by vehicle, listed these ranges as of September 30, 2026:
- Model 3: about $305 to $804 for the windshield, and up to about $1,154 for vehicles with advanced safety systems that need calibration.
- Model Y: about $513 to $875, and up to about $1,225 with calibration.
Every Tesla built for Autopilot has forward cameras behind the windshield, so the calibration-inclusive figure is the realistic one to plan around. Model S and Model X windshields are less common and generally cost more; get a quote with your VIN rather than relying on a general range.
Tesla Service or a Glass Shop?
You can book windshield work through the Tesla app or use an independent glass company. Tesla’s option guarantees genuine glass and a technician who knows the camera bracket. An independent shop may be cheaper and is often the default route for insurance claims. Whoever does it, ask three questions before booking:
- Is the glass genuine Tesla or an aftermarket equivalent, and does it have the same camera mounting and acoustic layer?
- Will the camera bracket and its housing be transferred and fitted correctly?
- Who is responsible if the cameras will not calibrate afterwards?
The last question matters most. If calibration fails because the glass or bracket is wrong, you want the shop that fitted it to put it right, not to be sent between two businesses.
Does Insurance Cover a Tesla Windshield?
Usually, if you carry comprehensive coverage. Windshield damage from stones, falling branches, hail and vandalism falls under comprehensive, not collision. The claim is subject to your comprehensive deductible unless your policy or state rules say otherwise.
Zero-Deductible States
According to Progressive, in Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina, if you have comprehensive coverage and meet all coverage requirements, your insurer cannot apply a deductible to a covered windshield replacement claim. That rule is under pressure. South Carolina’s House passed House Bill 4817 in 2026, which would make zero-deductible glass coverage optional rather than automatic from January 1, 2027, and it was in a Senate committee as of May 2026. Check with your insurer for the rule that applies to your policy now.
Repairs Often Cost Nothing
Progressive also notes that if a windshield can be repaired rather than replaced, and all coverage requirements are met, no deductible applies in any state. Many insurers waive the deductible for chip repair because it is far cheaper than paying for a replacement later. Repairs generally apply to damage under about 6 inches.
Should You Claim?
If your comprehensive deductible is close to the replacement cost, claiming may not be worth it. Glass claims are generally treated differently from at-fault accidents, but practices vary between insurers, so ask yours how a glass claim affects your premium before filing. Optional full-glass coverage, where available, removes the deductible for glass entirely.
Does the Tesla Warranty Cover the Windshield?
Only for defects. Tesla’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty excludes windshield or window glass that is broken, chipped, scratched or cracked, other than as a result of a defect in material or workmanship of a Tesla-made or Tesla-supplied windshield. It also excludes damage from road debris and stone chips. A crack that appears with no impact point, or a fault in the glass itself, is worth reporting to Tesla inside the 4-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty. A stone chip is an insurance matter. Our guide to the Tesla warranty covers the full list of exclusions.
Repair or Replace? What to Do About a Chip or Crack
A small chip can usually be repaired by injecting resin, which restores strength and stops it spreading. Repair is quicker and cheaper than replacement, keeps the original factory seal, and avoids recalibrating the cameras. Replacement is usually needed when:
- The damage is a crack longer than a few inches, or a chip larger than a repair can handle.
- The damage is in the driver’s direct line of sight, where a repair can leave a visible blemish.
- The damage reaches the edge of the glass, which weakens the whole windshield.
- The damage is in or near the camera area at the top of the windshield.
Act quickly on any chip. Heat, cold, car washes and road vibration all spread chips into cracks, and a heated cabin on a cold morning is a classic trigger. Clear tape over the chip keeps dirt and water out until it is repaired. Camera Calibration After a Windshield Replacement
This is the step owners most often miss. Tesla’s Model 3 owner’s manual says that if a camera has shifted from its calibrated position, for example because the camera or windshield was replaced, you must clear the calibration. The process is:
- Clear the calibration. Touch Controls > Service > Camera Calibration > Clear Calibration. The car then repeats its self-calibration.
- Drive to calibrate. Until calibration completes, some features, including Lane Departure Avoidance and Automatic Emergency Braking, may not be available. The touchscreen shows a progress indicator.
- Choose good roads. Calibration typically completes after 20 to 25 miles, according to the manual, and is quicker on straight, multi-lane roads such as highways with highly visible lane markings. The cameras need visible lane markings in your lane and the adjacent lanes.
- Contact Tesla if it does not finish. The manual says to contact Tesla only if calibration has not completed after 100 miles in those conditions. Clearing the calibration does not resolve every camera or sensor concern.
Miscalibrated cameras can cause odd Autopilot behaviour, including sudden braking for no reason. If driver-assistance features behave strangely after new glass, recalibration is the first thing to check. Our guide to Tesla phantom braking covers the other causes.
Keep the Camera Area Clean
The inside of the windshield within the camera enclosure also needs periodic cleaning to keep the cameras’ view clear. Tesla’s manual says to check whether it is due under Controls > Service > Maintenance and to book it through the app. It is a reasonable time to ask after a glass replacement too.
Can You Keep Driving With a Cracked Tesla Windshield?
With a small chip outside your view, yes, while you arrange a repair. With a crack, it depends on its size, its position and your state’s inspection and visibility rules. Many states restrict cracks in the driver’s line of sight. A crack across the camera area is a reason to stop relying on Autopilot and the driver-assistance features until it is fixed, because the cameras look through that glass. A shattered, sagging or heavily cracked windshield should be replaced before the car is driven any distance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to replace a Tesla windshield?
Recent customer quotes collected by Glass.net put the Model 3 at about $305 to $804 and the Model Y at about $513 to $875, rising to about $1,154 and $1,225 when camera calibration is included. With comprehensive insurance you usually pay only your deductible, or nothing in zero-deductible states.
Does insurance cover Tesla windshield replacement?
Yes, under comprehensive coverage, subject to your deductible. Progressive says Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina do not allow a deductible on covered windshield replacement claims, though South Carolina was considering a 2026 bill to change that from 2027. Repairs instead of replacements often carry no deductible anywhere.
Does the Tesla warranty cover a cracked windshield?
Only if the glass itself was defective. Tesla’s warranty excludes glass that is broken, chipped, scratched or cracked other than by a defect in material or workmanship, and excludes stone chips and road debris. Damage from a stone is an insurance claim.
Do Tesla cameras need calibrating after a windshield replacement?
Yes. Tesla’s manual says to clear the calibration under Controls, Service, Camera Calibration, Clear Calibration after a windshield or camera replacement. The car then self-calibrates, typically within 20 to 25 miles on roads with clear lane markings. Contact Tesla if it has not finished after 100 miles.
Can a Tesla windshield chip be repaired?
Usually, if it is small, away from the edge and not in the camera area or directly in the driver’s line of sight. Resin repair is cheaper than replacement, avoids camera recalibration and is often covered by insurance with no deductible.
Why does my Tesla brake for no reason after a new windshield?
Cameras that have not been recalibrated, or a camera bracket that was not fitted correctly, can make driver-assistance features behave strangely. Clear the camera calibration and drive on well-marked roads to recalibrate, and contact Tesla or the glass installer if the problem continues.
