Ford F-150 Lightning Frunk Won’t Open or Close: Causes and Fixes

Dark blue Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup with its full-width LED light bar lit, parked in a dim workshop

The F-150 Lightning’s power frunk is one of the truck’s best features: a large, lockable, water-resistant cargo space under the hood that opens and closes at the press of a button. It is also one of the most-discussed faults on Lightning owner forums. The frunk stops halfway, reverses when you try to close it, ignores the exterior button, closes again by itself, or refuses to move at all with a Frunk System Fault, Service Required message on the cluster. This article covers the causes in order of how easy they are to rule out, how to get the frunk open when the power system will not cooperate, and which fixes Ford has published.

Here is the quick reference.

Do not drive if the cluster shows “Frunk ajar, Stop safely, Close frunk”, or if you can see the frunk is not fully latched. Stop somewhere safe and close it before continuing. A frunk lid that lifts at speed blocks your view of the road. Every other cause in this article is an inconvenience rather than a safety problem.

How the Lightning’s Power Frunk Works

The frunk lid is moved by powered struts and controlled by its own module, which Ford’s service literature calls the FHCM. The system has two separate ways of detecting an obstruction. While opening, the powered struts sense resistance and stop the lid. While closing, pressure-sensing pinch strips along the edge detect anything in the way, and the lid stops and reverses back to open. Ford describes the frunk as having a rubberized, water-resistant interior with built-in drainage holes (see Ford’s own Mega Power Frunk overview).

Three rules built into the system explain a lot of “faults” that are really the frunk doing what it was designed to do:

  • It only operates in Park. Ford’s owner’s manual says so directly, and says a tone sounds and a warning message appears if there is a problem with an open or close request.
  • It will not hold a heavy load on the lid. If the frunk starts to close by itself after fully opening, the manual says this indicates excessive weight on the lid or a possible strut failure. A repetitive tone sounds and it closes under control.
  • Pushing or pulling the lid by hand fights the system. The manual warns that doing so can trigger obstacle detection, stop or reverse the lid, mimic a strut failure, or damage mechanical components.

Is This Covered by a Recall or TSB?

There is no safety recall for the F-150 Lightning’s power frunk that we could find, and the frunk is not part of the Lightning recalls issued for other systems. What does exist is Ford service guidance, which dealers use but which does not automatically trigger a letter to owners:

  • TSB 24-2103 covers some 2022 to 2024 F-150 Lightning trucks with an intermittently inoperative power frunk when opening or closing, a Frunk Fault Service Required message, and diagnostic code U2001:68 stored in the frunk module with no other code alongside it. The frunk still opens with the manual release and closes when pressed down by hand. The correction is to reprogram the frunk module to the latest software.
  • Special Service Message 50834 (2022 trucks) explains why the exterior frunk button appears dead on trucks without Remote Park Assist. Those trucks lack the front antennas used to search for the key fob, so the exterior button only works when the truck is 2-stage unlocked. Ford’s message, published on NHTSA’s site, notes the frunk can also be opened by pressing the instrument panel or touchscreen button first, and that “the key fob frunk button can be used to open and/or close the frunk regardless of lock status”.

Owners on Lightning forums also report corroded or wet connectors and failed frunk modules or struts being replaced under warranty, with no formal Ford bulletin describing water intrusion as a cause. Treat that as an owner-reported pattern rather than a confirmed Ford finding. To check whether your truck has any open recall for any system, enter your VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup or in the Ford app. Ask the dealer to check for applicable TSBs as well, because those do not appear in a recall search.

Symptoms of a Lightning Frunk Problem

The failure shows up in a handful of recognisable ways:

  1. “Frunk System fault, Service required” on the cluster. Ford’s manual says this means the system has detected a fault, and asks you to open the frunk with the service release strap if power operation is not available and make sure nothing is pressing the emergency release switch.
  2. The lid stops partway or reverses while opening or closing, with a tone. This is obstacle detection, and it is the right response to a real obstruction. It becomes a fault when it happens with nothing in the way.
  3. The exterior button does nothing while the fob, keypad or screen button still work. On 2022 trucks without Remote Park Assist, see SSM 50834 above.
  4. The frunk closes again by itself after opening, with a repeating tone. The manual points to excess weight on the lid or a strut problem.
  5. A frunk ajar warning, or a lid that closes only part of the way. Owners describe a lid resting on the secondary latch that neither power nor the release will move until it is pushed firmly down.
  6. “Frunk emergency release activated, Check frunk contents”. The glow-in-the-dark release button inside the frunk has been pressed, often by cargo shifting against it.

How to Diagnose It and Get the Frunk Open

Work through these in order. Most owners find the cause in the first few steps.

  1. Put the truck in Park. The frunk will not move in any other gear.
  2. Read the exact cluster message. “Emergency release activated”, “System fault” and “Frunk ajar” point to different causes.
  3. Look for resistance. Ford’s own FAQ lists aftermarket accessories, freezing conditions and being parked downhill as reasons the frunk may not open. Clear ice and snow from the seam, and check that nothing is resting on the lid or against the pinch strips.
  4. Try every control. Press the fob’s frunk button twice within three seconds, use the instrument panel button, use the touchscreen (Controls, then Access), and try the keypad (your code, then 7·8). If one method works and another does not, the fault is in that input rather than the frunk.
  5. Open it manually if power fails. Open the driver’s door, open the small access panel, pull the service release strap once to release the primary latch, then pull it again to release the frunk. The struts will hold it up. Ford recommends manual operation only when the battery is flat or the power frunk is faulty, and not unless the truck is in Park.
  6. Reset it with a full manual cycle. A reset widely reported by owners after a system fault, particularly when the frunk sat open for a long time: open it with the release, check the interior emergency button is not being pressed, then close the lid firmly by hand until it fully latches.
  7. Check the 12-volt battery. Ford’s FAQ lists low battery voltage as a possible cause when problems continue. A weak 12-volt battery also causes other electrical oddities, which our guide to the symptoms of a bad car battery covers.
  8. If faults keep returning, book a dealer visit. Ask them to read codes from the frunk module. U2001:68 on its own points to TSB 24-2103 and a software reprogram. Other codes, or a module that does not respond on the scan tool, point to wiring, a connector or the module itself.

Repair Cost

Most Lightning frunk problems cost nothing to fix. Obstacle detection, cargo on the emergency release, the 2022 exterior-button behaviour and a manual reset are all free. The TSB 24-2103 software reprogram is covered by Ford’s new-vehicle warranty while the truck is within it, and so are replacement modules, struts and connectors when the dealer finds a genuine fault.

Outside warranty, the cost depends on what failed. A software reprogram is short labour. A frunk control module, a powered strut or a wiring repair means parts plus labour, and Ford does not publish fixed prices for these, so get a written quote that names the part before approving work. If the dealer can find no fault, expect a diagnostic fee.

Can You Keep Driving With It?

Yes, as long as the frunk is fully closed and latched. A frunk that will not open is a nuisance, not a safety problem, and nothing about it affects how the truck drives, charges or brakes.

The exception is a frunk that is open or not fully latched. Ford’s manual says not to leave the frunk open while driving, and to check the cluster for a frunk ajar message before driving off. If the lid will not close by power, close it firmly by hand. If it still will not latch, do not drive the truck, because the lid could rise at speed and block your view. Park it and have it looked at. Also avoid carrying anything that will be damaged if it rains while the frunk is misbehaving, since owners link repeated faults to water in the connectors.

Charging or Screen Problems Too?

The frunk is not the only Lightning system that relies on its own module and software. If your truck also refuses to DC fast charge, will not release the charging cable, or has a frozen center screen, see our guide to F-150 Lightning charging failures and software glitches, which covers Ford’s charge port bulletin and the recalls that limit charging.

Why won’t my F-150 Lightning frunk open?

Check that the truck is in Park, then look for resistance: ice in the seam, an aftermarket accessory, parking on a steep downhill slope, or cargo pushing on the lid. Try the fob (press twice), the instrument panel button, the touchscreen and the keypad. If none work, open it manually with the service release strap behind the small access panel on the driver’s side, and have a dealer check the frunk module if the fault returns.

What does “Frunk System fault, Service required” mean?

It means the frunk system has detected a fault. Ford’s manual says to open the frunk with the service release strap if power operation is not available, make sure cargo is stowed properly and nothing is pressing the emergency release switch, and have the truck checked if the message keeps appearing. On many 2022 to 2024 trucks, an intermittent version of this fault with code U2001:68 is covered by TSB 24-2103, which reprograms the frunk module.

Is there a recall for the F-150 Lightning frunk?

No safety recall for the power frunk has been issued. Ford has published TSB 24-2103 for intermittent frunk operation and Special Service Message 50834 about the exterior button on some 2022 trucks. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to check for any open recall, and ask the dealer to check applicable TSBs.

Why does my Lightning frunk close by itself after opening?

Ford’s owner’s manual says that if the frunk starts to close after fully opening, there may be excessive weight on the lid or a possible strut failure. Remove anything hanging from or resting on the lid. If it keeps happening with nothing on it, have the struts checked.

Why doesn’t the outside frunk button work on my 2022 Lightning?

On 2022 trucks without Remote Park Assist, the exterior frunk button only works when the truck is 2-stage unlocked, because those trucks lack the front antennas that search for the key fob. Ford’s SSM 50834 notes that the fob’s frunk button works regardless of lock status, and that pressing the instrument panel or screen button first also lets the exterior button work.

Is it safe to drive with the frunk ajar warning on?

No. Stop safely and close the frunk completely before continuing. A frunk lid that lifts at speed can block your view. If the lid will not latch by power, press it down firmly by hand, and if it still will not latch, do not drive the truck until it has been repaired.
