Best Oil Filter - The Top 8

The importance of oil filters is many times overlooked by car owners and enthusiasts. This key element of the engine lubrication system is responsible for preventing abrasive contaminants of causing damage. These abrasive particles range from metal debris to harmful chemicals coming from fuel and engine oil itself once it degrades.

That’s why choosing the appropriate oil filter is so crucial. The right oil filter can save you from a catastrophic mechanical failure result of a clogged or blocked oil line.

Fortunately, a good quality oil filter usually cost only a few dollars more than a “generic” no-brand equivalent. Why risking your engine then?

How to Change Engine Oil

Changing the engine oil yourself is a great way to save money and to ensure the job is done properly. There are other options available, but usually it's cheaper to do the job yourself.

IMPORTANT: Changing the engine oil in your car involves jacking it up and supporting it using appropriate jack stands. Before starting, be sure you have the correct tools for the job and that you know what you are doing. Engine oil is toxic so always wear safety goggles and the appropriate protective gloves when handling your engine oil.

1. Check You Have Everything At Hand

Before starting changing your engine oil is a good idea to prepare the materials and tools you would need during the job. Use the following checklist to confirm that you are ready:

  1. Safety goggles and gloves.
  2. The right oil filter wrench. Depending on your vehicle you may need a specialized tool to remove or access your oil filter.
  3. Appropriate wrench for the oil plug.
  4. A large plastic container, with enough capacity to hold all engine oil.
  5. A funnel, depending on your vehicle you may need a flexible oil funnel when refilling the engine with oil.
  6. Paper towels.
  7. Recommended engine oil for your car.
  8. Recommended engine oil filter for your engine.
  9. Appropriate floor jack and jack stands.
  10. (Optional) oil plug gasket, it’s a good idea to have one at hand to avoid leaks.
  11. (Optional) engine oil system cleaner.

2. Prepare The Engine

If your engine is hot let it cool down a bit before changing the oil. Hot engine oil can easily burn your skin and cause severe injuries. However, if your engine is totally cold warm it up for 5 minutes by taking it for a short drive.

This allows oil circulation and an evenly distributed oil viscosity before changing it.

3. Lift Your Car And Secure It

Using an adequate floor jack lift your vehicle and then secure it using the jack stands. Double check that it is secured before proceeding, this is crucial to avoid any incident.

Also, check the parking brake is applied and the transmission is not in neutral. If it's an automatic, put it in park, if it's a manual transmission make sure its is in first gear.

4. Drain The Oil

You may need to consult the owners handbook before starting.

Next, remove any protective covers. Place the oil container in position and then carefully loosen the oil plug.

Always use the correct sized wrench to avoid damaging the oil plug. You will need to have patience while the old engine oil drains, this usually takes several minutes. Move on to step 5 while you are waiting.

Once the old oil stops dripping you can re-install the oil plug. It’s advisable to replace the oil plug gasket / o-ring as necessary.

5. Remove The Oil Filter

While you are waiting for the oil to drain, it's a good idea to remove the oil filter.

Using a suitable oil filter wrench, remove the old oil filter. Clean the engine block surface and double check that the old filter o-ring seal is not still on the engine. Not doing so is a common mistake that can cause leaks.

6. Install The New The Oil Filter

Lubricate the new filter seal (if it's a spin on) with clean engine oil and proceed to install it on the car. If it's a paper filter, be sure to replace the seals on the oil filter housing lid before replacing it.

Now tighten everything up using the recommended torque force. Before moving on, ensure the oil filter and the engine is completely clean, that will help to detect possible leaks.

7. Add The Engine Oil

Double check the handbook before you add any oil, you don't want to overfill the engine as this can cause damage.

Using the funnel add the new oil to the engine. Once finished, check the dipstick to verify you have added the correct amount. The oil level should be between the min and max markings on the dipstick.

8. Start The Engine

Double check that you have tightened everything and added the correct amount of oil.

Now start the engine and keep it idling for a few minutes (avoid accelerating) Check the instruments panel and verify that the engine oil lamp stays off.

Now check around the sump plug and oil filter for oil leaks.

9. Final Check

Turn off the engine and check the oil level again. If everything goes as expected take note of the current mileage for your future reference.

10. Optional: using the Engine Cleaner

In case you want to use an engine cleaner then you must use it on step 7 instead of new engine oil. Follow step 8 to let the product clean your engine. Then go back to step 4, drain the product and continue the rest of the procedure.

Congratulations, you successfully changed your vehicle engine oil!
